Florence is a 26 year old, mother of 4. She is not formally trained as a teacher but stepped in to teach the Kindergarten in the village of Yaw Tenkorang because the class had been without a teacher for over a year. Florence serves 36 children ages 4-6 every day. She brings her own children to the classroom with her, carrying her 6 month old on her back for the whole day.
Since she was not officially appointed by the government (the government has not sent a teacher to the Kindergarten despite many requests in years), she does not receive a salary. The village elders try to pay her something, but with her husband out of work, it is not enough. When asked why she volunteers in the Kindergarten, she expresses her desire to help the children to be happy and learn to read and write. She is dedicated to improving the schools where her children will someday attend.
